Rooftop solar has become more affordable for Telangana homeowners thanks to the financial assistance available under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Eligible residential consumers can reduce their initial investment, lower monthly electricity bills and use net metering to receive credit for surplus electricity supplied to the grid.

However, the solar panel subsidy in Telangana 2026 is not automatically included in every solar quotation. Consumers must register through the official portal, obtain the required approval, select an eligible vendor, and complete the DISCOM inspection process.

This guide explains the current subsidy amounts, eligibility rules, required documents and application process for Telangana households.

What Is the Solar Panel Subsidy in Telangana 2026?

The solar panel subsidy in Telangana 2026 is provided mainly through the Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar scheme. It supports eligible residential electricity consumers who install grid-connected rooftop solar systems.

The scheme is implemented through the national PM Surya Ghar portal in coordination with the relevant electricity distribution company. Telangana consumers will generally come under either TGSPDCL or TGNPDCL, depending on their location.

The subsidy is transferred after the rooftop system has been installed, inspected, connected through the prescribed metering arrangement and approved on the portal. The scheme is intended for residential consumers; ordinary commercial and industrial installations do not receive this residential subsidy.

PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Amount in Telangana

The subsidy is calculated according to the approved rooftop solar capacity.

Rooftop solar capacityMaximum central subsidy
1 kW₹30,000
2 kW₹60,000
3 kW₹78,000
More than 3 kW₹78,000

The first 2 kW receives ₹30,000 per kW. The next 1 kW receives an additional ₹18,000. No further subsidy is added for capacity beyond 3 kW, so the maximum assistance for an individual residential connection is ₹78,000 under the current structure.

For example, a homeowner installing a 5 kW system may still receive only ₹78,000, provided the installation satisfies the scheme requirements.

The advertised benefit of “up to 300 units” refers to the electricity a suitably sized rooftop system may generate or offset. It does not mean the DISCOM simply gives every registered household 300 free grid units regardless of solar generation.

Benefits of the Solar Panel Subsidy in Telangana 2026

Lower Initial Investment

The subsidy reduces the effective cost of installing rooftop solar. A qualifying 3 kW system can receive financial assistance of up to ₹78,000.

Reduced Electricity Bills

Solar panels generate electricity during the day, reducing the number of units purchased from the DISCOM. Actual savings depend on generation, consumption pattern, tariff and net-metering adjustments.

Benefit from Surplus Electricity

Under an approved net-metering arrangement, surplus solar electricity can be exported to the distribution network and adjusted according to the applicable Telangana regulations.

Long-Term Protection from Tariff Increases

Once installed, rooftop solar can meet part of the household’s electricity requirement for many years. This reduces exposure to future increases in grid electricity tariffs.

Who Is Eligible for Solar Panel Subsidy in Telangana?

To apply for the solar panel subsidy in Telangana 2026, the applicant should generally satisfy these requirements:

  • The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
  • The property must have a valid residential electricity connection.
  • The applicant should own the house or have the necessary legal authority to install solar on the roof.
  • The roof must have adequate, structurally suitable and preferably shadow-free space.
  • The household must not have already received another subsidy for the same rooftop solar installation.
  • The system must be grid-connected and approved by the relevant DISCOM.
  • The installation must be completed through a vendor registered under the applicable scheme process.
  • The modules and system must meet the current technical and domestic-content requirements.

The official eligibility information identifies Indian citizenship, ownership of a suitable house, a valid electricity connection and non-availment of another solar-panel subsidy as key conditions.

Tenants, apartment residents and housing societies should first confirm roof rights, electricity-connection arrangements and the appropriate application category.

How to Apply for Solar Subsidy in Telangana

Step 1: Register on the PM Surya Ghar Portal

Visit the official PM Surya Ghar website and create an account. Select Telangana, choose the correct DISCOM and enter the electricity consumer number, mobile number and email address.

Step 2: Submit the Rooftop Solar Application

Log in using the registered details and complete the rooftop solar application. Select a system capacity after considering electricity consumption, sanctioned load and available roof space.

Step 3: Obtain Technical Feasibility Approval

Wait for approval before beginning installation. Telangana’s published workflow states that technical feasibility may be automatically generated for rooftop systems below 10 kW when the relevant capacity and sanctioned-load conditions are met. Where additional load is required, a separate process may be triggered.

Step 4: Select a Registered Solar Vendor

Choose an eligible vendor listed through the authorised process. Discuss the complete price, subsidy-adjusted cost, panels, inverter, protection equipment, mounting structure, warranties and installation work.

Step 5: Complete the Installation

The vendor installs the approved rooftop system. The work should follow the sanctioned capacity, applicable technical standards and DCR requirements.

Step 6: Upload Installation Details

After installation, upload the required plant details, DCR declaration, vendor and DISCOM agreements, invoice and geo-tagged photographs. Apply for the net meter through the prescribed process.

Step 7: DISCOM Inspection and Net Metering

The concerned DISCOM inspects the installation and verifies the submitted details. After approval, the existing meter may be replaced with a net meter and the system is synchronised with the grid.

Step 8: Submit the Subsidy Claim

After the commissioning report is generated, submit the bank details and cancelled cheque on the portal. The approved subsidy is transferred directly to the consumer’s bank account.

Important Conditions to Remember

Apply and receive feasibility approval before installing the system. Do not assume that any rooftop solar system purchased independently will qualify later.

The solar panel subsidy in Telangana 2026 applies to eligible residential installations, not automatically to shops, offices, factories or other commercial connections. Subsidy approval is also separate from net-metering approval.
