Installation of solar panels in recent years is backed by government initiatives to motivate the adoption of solar energy. If you are residing in Maharashtra and are planning to install rooftop solar solutions for your home’s energy needs you can avail of various schemes offering solar subsidy in Maharashtra.
In this blog, we will look into the available options to avail solar panel government subsidy in Maharashtra
To avail of the solar panel subsidy in Maharashtra, the steps are as follows:
Step 1: To start off, a site assessment should be done to evaluate the best setup for the installation.
Step 2: After the survey is done, you’ll know the system capacity and costing analysis, along with an expected performance review.
Step 3: After you’ve reviewed the details, compare with other vendors and purchase your solar system.
Step 4: Once your solar system is installed, you can apply for net metering with your local electricity department.
Step 5: After the rooftop solar panels are installed, you will receive your solar subsidy in Maharashtra within 30 days.
After installing of grid-connected solar system with net metering, the next step is to upload the installation report to your electricity department. The report should include system details, manufacturer information for your solar panels and inverter, and necessary photographs (like earthing, lighting arrester, DCDB, ACDB, wire thickness, etc.).
The following steps must be followed to apply for net metering to get solar subsidy in Maharashtra.
You have the option to submit your application online or offline. Some states have developed an online platform for solar connections, while in other states, the process still requires manual submission.
If you live in Maharashtra, you’ll need to get in touch with your local DISCOM to complete the process. The following is the list of the key DISCOMs in Maharashtra:
If you are aiming to go solar and want to save your electricity bills by up to 90% all you have to do is understand various schemes available as explained below to enable you to get the solar subsidy in Maharashtra. Maharashtra is bestowed with good geographical features and has a good amount of months facilitating the absorption of solar energy.
Let’s understand the various initiatives by the central and state governments offering solar subsidy in Maharashtra.
Subsidy for Residential Households:
Subsidy for Group Housing Society/Resident Welfare Association (GHS/RWA):
In a bid to promote rooftop solar power among economically weaker sections (EWS) of society in Maharashtra, the state government will introduce a new policy. It will offer solar subsidy in Maharashtra to help EWS consumers purchase solar panels, in line with the central government’s “PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.”
The state energy department has been working on the policy, with a target to provide 20 lakh solar panels under the scheme within the next year.
Currently, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Orissa are providing Rs 10,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively from their coffers to fund rooftop solar power for the weaker sections.
Out of 29 million consumers in Maharashtra, 4.5 million are agricultural consumers, using 22% of the state’s electricity. Currently, farmers face inconvenience due to the nighttime power supply, while industries demand affordable electricity for competitiveness.
To address these challenges, the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana was launched in 2017, with the following details:

Central financial assistance (or subsidy) is available only for residential sector grid-connected solar rooftop projects. For other sectors e.g. Govt., institutional, social, commercial, industrial etc. CFA is not available.
Central Financial Assistance (CFA)* to Residential sector to avail solar subsidy in Maharashtra:
For the calculation of CFA, the PV plant capacity will be the inverter capacity or the PV module capacity, whichever is lower. For availing CFA, the PV module and cell shall be manufactured in India only.
While all solar PV systems generate power only during daytime when the sun is available, in net-metered systems, the generated power is utilized for self-consumption and excess power is exported to the grid as long as the grid is available. This arrangement is made in case where solar power is not sufficient due to cloud cover etc., power is drawn from the grid to power the loads. A bi-directional or net meter records the energy flow in both directions and at the end of the billing period, net energy used is calculated. The beneficiary has to pay only for the net energy used.
The PM KUSUM scheme was launched by the Government of India in 2019 through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to promote the use of solar power for agricultural uses. This initiative aims to reduce farmers' reliance on diesel pumps and increase their income by generating extra electricity.
The scheme includes solarizing 15 lakh grid-connected agricultural pumps, allowing farmers to install solar panels on their existing pumps (up to 8 HP). It also covers Feeder Level Solarization as part of the initiative.
Solar panel government subsidy in Maharashtra aims at empowering households with reduced electricity bills and taking steps towards reducing dependence on conventional sources, thus helping the environmental initiatives in the longer run.
Solar subsidy in Maharashtra is available under various schemes such as PM Muft Ghar Bijli Yojana, Subsidy for EWS, Subsidies for farmers under CM Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana and various other incentives to boost the installation of solar rooftop solutions for benefitting households and farmers.
